Mindfulness, Movement & Meditation (3M)

“Mindfulness is the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgementally to the unfolding of experience moment by moment.”   (Jon Kabat-Zinn, 2003)

This class teaches a series of stretches and postures using techniques based on a gentle form of Hatha Yoga but with the main focus on the 'mindful' component of the practice. Mindfulness is learning to be more aware of our physical, mental and emotional state of being at a given moment, so with regards to this practice, the aim is to have the intention of keeping the mind in the movements as much as possible in order to forge a real sense of unity between mind and body. With practice this sense of connection with our inner self will hopefully be experienced not just during the class but, also as one goes about everyday life.  Becoming aware of the breath is an intrinsic part of any mindfulness program; over time, and with practice, it is recognised as a powerful resource on which to draw for mental and emotional equilibrium as well as for physical release of tension.

A 3M class consists of:

A Body Scan – Turning the mind inward and following a guided relaxation breathing exercise helps focus the mind and calm the physical body in preparation for movement.

Movement – Using the breath as the anchor a series of stretches and postures are performed. Over time, the physical movements can themselves become a moving meditation when practiced with awareness, where the mind is working in harmony with the body.

Meditation – The class concludes with a meditation creating a space for quiet contemplation whilst the body is still, allowing us to find some moments of peace and stillness.

Some reported benefits of the 3M program are:

  • Increased flexibility and, over time, experiencing less aches and pains
  • Developing a sense of calm
  • Experiencing better quality sleep and generally feeling more energized
  • Gradual acquisition of a sense of self-awareness
  • Developing coping strategies in stressful situations
  • Improved mental focus and insightfulness
